Remodel to Expand Your Kitchen and Improve Usability – Make the Most of Underutilized Space or Design an Addition

Kitchen Remodeling & Expansions – Before and After

Birmingham Kitchen after expansion

Remodeling your kitchen by adding on or expanding the size of the room will give you a kitchen that works the way you need it to.

Get the room you need to add a pantry, work island, or additional counter space to create different usability zones. This makes it easier for your family to cook together. Growing a kitchen into an unused space or adding an extension to your home will create the kitchen of your dreams without confining you to your current square footage.

With this kitchen expansion and remodel from our Birmingham Alabama Remodeling franchise, you can see how claiming underused space allows a family to add light, counter space, and multiple work zones.

Birmingham Kitchen Before expansion

Before the remodeling expansion, the kitchen had limited available counter space, “empty space” above the upper cabinets, and traditional cabinet faces. The floor plan left a small footprint, which made it difficult for multiple people to use the kitchen at the same time. The lone window let in minimal natural light, which was supplemented by one ceiling light fixture. In addition, the blue tile countertops with white grout lines didn’t match the homeowner’s style.

Birmingham Kitchen After Expansion 1

To expand the kitchen during the remodel, the entry wall was removed and floor space was added from an underutilized room. French doors were added, which let in more light and now allows the family easy outside access.

To further increase the light, the small window above the sink was replaced with a longer, taller window. The ceiling fan/light fixture was replaced with recessed lights and pendant lights, and undermounted task lights were added to work areas. The increased lighting and counter space create multiple work areas where the family can cook together.

Birmingham Kitchen Cabinets and Refrigerator

The cabinet design and hardware were updated, and modern conveniences were added, including deep drawers for pots and pans, a pull-out waste bin, and ceiling-height upper cabinets.

Next to the counter-depth refrigerator, a small butler’s pantry was added for glass storage.
